  1. Release Notes for Newer version 1.1.1 (January 6, 1991)

  3. 12/8/1990 - Recent changes (since version 1.1):
  4. Fix bus error which occurred when user opened a text file with very long lines of text rather than a Newer command file. This would not occur when opening a normal command file but results when a user misunderstands the operation of the program and mistakenly tries to open a file which is to be backed up rather than a command file.

  6. 8/6/1990 - 1.1 changes (since version 1.1b5):
  7. Adjust size of "File Size" field so that it gets cleared correctly between files. Previously it left screen cruft after copying files greater than 1000 bytes but less than 1K. Not a functional change.

  9. 5/10/1990 - 1.1b5 changes (since version 1.1b4):
  10. Make "Nocopy" option ("Copy Files" not checked) compare file dates if there is a backup disk so it will be a true preview of what will happen if you run for real rather than just a list of the files which are newer than the timestamp and which are not filtered out by the "Exclude Files" and "Exclude File Types" lists.

Never copy files named "DeskTop", "deskTop", "desktop", etc.  This avoids clobbering the invisible control file by which the Mac system keeps track of your folders and files.  Tops (and possibly other network systems) may create one of these files in any folder which may get mounted on the network.

  14. Add "Save Options Now" button to options dialog.  This enables you to save changes to your options settings without having to actually run a backup.
  15.

Remember if the user changes the options before running the backup and if user discards log changes but has made changes to options, ask if they want to save the options changes.  This makes it more obvious that the options settings and the log text are kept in the same file (the options in the resource fork and the log text in the data fork), and enables you to discard changes to the text while still saving changes you may have made to the options.

  18. Add "…" to the "Open" menu item.  This enables you to re-enter Newer under Multi-Finder by double-clicking on a Newer command file.

  20. Add prompt and pre-clear file name in "New File" dialog.  This cleans up some confusing stuff you might see when creating a new command file.

  22. Make the log text window bigger.  It was kind of small, wasn't it?

  24. 3/25/1990 - 1.1b4 changes (since version 1.0):
  25. Added code to get around bug in Tops/AppleShare causing Newer to fail to automatically create required folders on a backup disk mounted over a network.

  27. Implemented "Disk Name" option which lets you back up to disks whose names do not start with "backup".
  28.  
  29. Implemented "Must Match" option which lets you specify the complete disk name and will not run if that disk is not present.
  30.  
  31. Added the "Subfolder Name" option which allows backup data to be stored in a subfolder of the backup disk.
  32.  
  33. Added "Use Previous Timestamp" option which lets you repeat a backup run with the same timestamp even if it normally depends on the "modified date" of the command file.

  35. Show file sizes and progress bar in status window.

  37. Fixed bug in "Save As".

  39. The "Use This Date" field is a little more forgiving: if you type mm/dd, it will assume this year or last year, as appropriate (ie: it won't assume a future date).

  53. Known bugs or other anomalies in the current version:
  54. Free space on disks with more than 65,535 K free (65 megabytes) is reported incorrectly.  This is due to an Apple limitation which I am not sure I can overcome.

Free space on Tops volumes (and presumably on other types of network mounted disks) is not updated during the copy process.  The value displayed will be the free space at the start of the process.  If, in the backup option, you specify "Copy Log File Too", the free space displayed briefly while the log file is being copied (when you store it) will be correct as of the end of the main copy process.
